The Taho with Fireworks

new year's eve is tomorrow but people are starting to "bomb" the streets. arrghhh. and some of them throw the firecrackers randomly on the pavement! think of the innocent pedestrians you people!!!

i have a confession to make, hindi pako nakapagpaputok ng paputok. and the f*ck now that we're older doesn't that phrase just sound so wrong? hehehe i remember my homo prof once asked us boys in the class (after we returned from Christmas break), "o nagpaputok ba kayo'? and i remember shaking my head in my minds eye--although probably we all much pretty did (who doesn't LOL).

and the fact still remains, i've never lighted a firecracker more specifically the more "dangerous" kind--and in the Philippines lighting the wicks of triangular packets filled with explosives--"pulbura" (is it gun powder?) is pretty much a male dominated past time on new year's eve--that and the usual alcohol and crispy pata binging (yep while lighting freakin bombs on the side).

i dont like to think that i'm a wuss really, wala lang, i think endangering yourself for a loud bang is pretty stupid and i need my five digits! i'm an artist--my hands should be insured (nakkss)--but yeah i have to admit i'm a bit jumpy. LOL! and have you seen the recent XL sizes of those things? man! they have handbag sizes!

*wanna hear a traumatic new year's story?

i got one.

when you're a kid living in the jungle of manila the only firecracker you are allowed to play with is the "watusi" (and yeah the lusis too) its this matchstick firecracker hehehe of chinese make that you light like, well, a match. it goes *pak *pak *pak dancing, sparking all around till it vanishes in a trail of smoke.

well one new year's eve when my generation ruled the streets of this town (>LOL) we had a whole box of watusi to finish for the night...and you know when you are a kid it's pretty normal to light watusi with stunts--just scratching it on the ground is considered lame, and of course no wants to be lame. So we all had these stunts like for example lighting a watusi stick and then cupping both palms while letting it spark inside (with vigorous shaking) or grinding a packet of 'em with a big chunk of rock.

long story short amidst the stunts and that distinct haze of watusi...a friend of mine decided to throw one in the air--or if im not mistaken he decided to throw one AT me. and for some reason-i can't remember why, it got lodged on my shirt and i started panicking cause it was sparking near my face and i ran like hell to my parents (LOL)--nothing serious happened--but the memory of that shame, while i cried and ran will be with me forever.

***
and for the taho part of this ramble wala lang, it's just that i had a good cup of taho this morning hehehe i woke up to the sounds of the garbage truck again--and watsup with all the irregular skeds during the holidays?--so i ran and tried to catch up with the truck near the end of our street--(good thing i'm beefing up my cardio)(hehehe)--meaning i got up out of bed before noon (hell am sure gonna miss this)

*taho is a breakfast beverage i dont think it has other variations across asia- i dont know, but taho in the philippines is simply soybean curd (softer and more tender than tofu) with tapioca (nakks) and syrup.

and dont you think it's so postmodern now that the taho vendor sells taho at 10 am???
wala lang. i think im gonna expound on that on my future collections of essays/

fuck it.
if im sacrificing myself to the academe
I want immortality!!!
bwahahahahahahaa!!!

*the sound of his laugh echoes on every street.
