Claude Levi-Strauss1908-2009
Heard the news in class tonight--after more than a month!
Was surprised to hear the sad news that the great French thinker Claude Levi-Strauss has passed away (October 30, 2009). To be honest we were surprised because most of us thought that he died long ago, but man! to hear na he was still kicking in my lifetime fills me with awe. Man... Levi-Strauss a genuine theory-god.
May he rest in peace, he has been granted immortality by the pantheon of history--his works will definitely live on for generations to come.
Strauss would always be special for me because one of his works was my assigned topic for report and commentary and how could i forget the title?
the structural study of myth
it was provocative.
though we have moved on to different things now
it was just a piece of great theorizing.
in the piece Strauss
actually sought to explain how different creation myths
from different cultures seem to be the same.
And from this question sprang forth a mathematical
formula to test it!
and in the end he concludes how myths are basically
a means of how people tend to explain conflicting truths
about their lives.
