Cathartic Saturday Part 1: Dharma Cab Guru Karma Cocky You

Let me speak of the beginning.

Took a cab on my way to the library to borrow/return/photocopy some books this morning.
(saturday is the only time i could go sa library)

"Anong course niyo?"

"ah MA po ako"

"gradweyt na? tapos nag-aaral ka pa ulit?"

*no reply

"sabagay ganyan naman kasi pag mayayaman"

*wish ko lang manong na ganun ang buhay ko.
yung binabayaran ni mommy yung condo ko sa salcedo habang
nag-eeMBA o law ako sa Ateneo rockwell

"Ako po nagpapaaral sa sarili ko, nagtratrabaho po ako"

"Law po kayo nuh?"

*Geez manong wat gave it away? my big granny bag of borrowed books and my trusty bookrest?

"hindi po, literature"

*i didn't bother to see if he made the baffled look.

"siguro ang talino niyo po, taga-UP kayo eh"

*Paano niyo sinasagot ito? kapwa kong mga iskolar ng bayan?
hindi nga, I want to know.

***
it hit me.
i'm lucky
for my kind at least.

Thus, I think I've come to a pseudo-marxist-lacanian reason for why am I taking grad skool. Besides the fact na I like books and shit.

at sinabi yun ni Culler(in describing an aspect of lit):

"Literature has been the activity of a cultural elite, and it has been what is sometimes called 'cultural capital": learning about literature gives you a stake in culture that may pay off in various ways, helping you fit in with people of higher social status"

shet. I fit it kasi, ito ba tlga ang rason? deep inside?

bakit?

is it because nakikita ko ang lower (lower) middle class background ko sa mga gawain nila?

huwaw

EVANGELION: Re|build

Yeah I know it's kinda late for this but since the Second movie of the planned Tetralogy premiered recently in Japan, I just wanna express myself.

I love Evangelion. If the martial law babies have Transformers or GI Joe, meron akong Evangelion. When I was a kid, elementary--nearing highschool, it was very popular to have japanese Animes on TV during weekday afternoons.

And I did the rounds, BTX, ZENKI, etc.

But Evangelion was the one that really struck me since it was unlike anything I've seen before--most of the time I didn't get the f*ck whats happening. But each day, every afternoon I tuned in. Cause I appreciated it's worlding and the lore. Who could forget the Geo Front? the terminal Dogma, basically an underground city upside down? The tension when the EVAs only had like 3minutes to function without power supply? the bizarre look of the Angels...

ADAM? Lilith?
3rd Impact?
The magi?

And the original weird ending.

*And the implied SEX SCENCE! between Kaji and Misato!
tapos basically hear, yeah in tagalog!!! (usually they dubbed all animes in Tagalog)
Misato saying something like, Kaji! Kaji! and the moans and grunts of Kaji as if about to cum. LOL
Seryoso tlga!

Yep, akala ko ABS-CBN didn't finish the entire run. Kasi they stopped with the last episode, basically--with all the characters clapping for Shinji.

WTF* indeed.

_________________________________
It was only in college when I had the chance to watch the old series again that I knew na the last episode I saw was indeed the ending. BUT! the creators decided to make a new ending which turned to be a film: "End of Evangelion"

It fuckin' blew my mind.

Seeing Asouka, battle like 7 or nine EVAs?!!?!?!?!?!?!
With UNIT 002 being pierced by the spear of longinus in the end
SHETTTTT!!!

And the ending...with all humans turning into primordial soup.
___________________________________________

I appreciated Evangelion more once I got to understand it's themes much better.
"The Human Instrumentality Project"

it's themes of being alone, getting hurt, love--it's freakin' existential

like now, kaya pala UNIT01 works with Shinji cause basically it has a part of his mother (yeah a little sick) and the curious bond of Rei with the Ikari's cause basically she's a clone of her mother, in her image.

And the original ending, with all of them clapping for Shinji--it basically means na napapayag na nila si Shinji sa gusto mangyari ng SEAL, yung nga yung Human Instrumentality project.

and syempre more information and backstory about lilith and Adam.

* i tell you as all of them were bursting in the end to liquid and the giant Rei/Lilith offering Shinji the final choice to fuse with all of them... na-appreciate ko yung thought na humans should get hurt, even if each of us have barriers/shells we should'nt be afraid of reaching out. LOL yeah bumenta naman saken

So how was the the first installment of the remake?
I like it, it's fast paced, and easier to understand.
Kasi some of the mystery gets a little treatment na agad.

some of the new scenes were a KILLER!

Like how Shinji's first battle with the 1st Angel
now happens at night! and you could only see UNIT 01's form sa neon markings
niya...shetttt!!

and yung last na kalaban sa film! remember yung episode na parang they had to use this gun na requires the power of whole japan to fire? nandun pa din!
pero this time, PANALO yung cube/diamond shape na kalaban.

hahaha, siguro medyo bias ako. kasi nostalgic tlga for me yung panood ko.

The second installment features Asouka arriving na. and medyo mag iiba na daw yung story line.

I CAN"T WAIT!

Late for Wall-E

I've given up on Disney pretty much after they transitioned to computer animation... that was Toy Story right? I guess it's because of the age na rin, like how I don't feel any excitement na when I visit Toy Kingdom. So I really wasn't crazy for all their new stuff with Pixar, like Monsters Inc., Finding Nemo, Cars and the rest of the shit. It's not that I won't watch them over my dead body, I just mean na I wouldn't go out of my way to see them. Because I still like animation: Japanese animation hehehe. And am not closing my door on all those heart warming flicks, cause heck! I watch Studio Ghibli films: I confess I wanna meet Totoro on my next rainy ride home.

But I'm glad I saw Wall-E on the Disney Channel last night. I emphatized with Wall-E kasi, you know being all alone, with work as distraction. teka teka, tama ba to? Hahaha!
And his desire to reach out to someone, who cannot relate to that?

Ayos 'to
naantig yung puso ko :p

Emma Watson

Burberry Autumn/Winter 2009

Hermione no more.

English girls I tell you....

Run, Run, Gadget!

Look at what arrived yesterday noon.

It's my new Nike heart rate monitor! hehehe Yes, people, after being left for dead a couple of times, I have decided that "cleverness is sexual power" doesn't cut it for chicks. So I have embarked on a campaign to loose the pounds since last year--cause to be honest, my last years at FA got me really ronde, or as my other friends would put it "hiyang" (sa FA).

And Agency life after school didn't help either...those were really UNhealthy days--late nights, little sleep, FOOD binging...peanut butter dougnuts, fries, alam niyo na yun...with ZERO activity, chained to your desk for the rest of the day, I don't know if walking fast to catch the train counts as a sport. And who can't forget the ONLY greatest feat of physical endeavor I under went:

climbing down 40 freakin' flights of stairs.
don't ask.

with a change of setting, brought a change of heart (?)

Cause man my 20s will pass just like that, and I have no plans to be fat for the remainder of it. So try to stay fit, to let the"palay" come to the "manok" (I hope to God, it works).

:::>>>

So I'm excited to take it out for a test run.

* and yes I'm almost broke, but it's for my health! it's an investment!

Stay healthy and keep fit people :)

The Angel of History

Yesterday's class meeting was weird. Prof told us to meet at 4pm in the afternoon only to find a note on her door saying na we were absent--the class was supposed to meet at 1pm.

Did I tell you I was really looking forward to the discussion? Yes. So it was really disappointing that things didn't play out as planned. :-(

Since we skipped a meeting, we're going to dive in agad with the topics. Each of us got assigned a subject to discuss next week... I have two documents. One by Culler :) and one by Levi-Strauss. Kaya ko ba ito? well, I just have to try I guess. Iisipin ko nalang siguro na parang book club ito, yun nga lang instead of talking about fiction, I'll be talking about über complicated jargon...

a prof told me once na "bananas" daw na sabihin na lit majors talk much nonsense--gibberish. As with any other profession my terms naman talaga na specific doon sa field of expertise mo. She has a point naman. Dito na ba magtatapos ang grad studies ko? we have to maintain a high grade kasi...form what I've heard as much as possible NO grade below than 2. *sigh

Basta if I go down, I'll go down not without a fight.

So I have a week to prepare. Thank gawd eto lang subject ko...kasi bukod sa work ko meron pakong raket this week...am stressed nanaman, especially over the weekend puro OT ako dito. tapos my french pako sa sabado and my assignment na din. WAAAHHH.

***
medyo mahirap yung french ko this term kasi, sobrang french kung french yung titser. unlike sa dati kong titser na sinasabi in english after french, yung current teacher ko eh 4 to 5 sentences na dire-diretsong french tapos bits of english phrases on the side... nahihiya naman akong mag-demand na englishin niya, since none of my classmates mind.

nagising talga ako nung Sat kahit wala pakong tulog nun, kasi ako yung unang-una tinawag para i-introduce yung sarili ko sa class--and what do i do, and stuff. '-.-

...
wish me luck.

but on a lighter side, I got a needed cheer me up in the form of Benjamin's "Theses on the Philosophy of History" bakit? well medyo na gets ko siya since aware naman nako sa mga ibang jargon na ginagamit niya, and hello nag-historiographic metafiction na kaya ako last sem ;)
Seryoso.

It's sad na Benjamin only became famous when he died. napaka-tragic diba? parang katulad ni nietzsche, sobrang naapektuhan ako nung sinabi niya na he knows na yung mga nasulat niya eh para sa tao na hindi pa nabubuhay sa kaniyang panahon, --na hindi pa sila pinanganganak....anyways, man, hanga ako sa writing style ni Benjamin. Especially on the part na he describes the "Angel of History" referring to a Paul Klee painting.

the Angel of history! just to formulate an argument about material historicists

yun lang.

It is now official

It's cool to be uncool.

Culler & My First Day of Class

Classes started for me yesterday. My ONLY* class this semester.
and oh boy, il fait mauvais indeed.

At syempre my temper got tested right away when the tricycle driver wanted to charge me 60bucks from ateneo to krus na ligas. (As much as i feel for you guys and the kind of hard work that u do--but gud gawd! you can be such assholes... can't you stick to you're fare matrixes! 25pesos lang from any point in Katips--and CP garcia ain't that fuckin' far! how can you justify more than a 50% increase, ano ba kayo manong... actually i could report him to the management, but i can't bear his, like 3-day suspension (?) on my conscience--but my patience has its limits. so i ended up getting off at Petron Station near l'eglise (*wink) dela Strada to prendre a katips jeep.

I haven't blogged about how horrible the weather was the day I enrolled--the long lines etc. let's just say that I'm glad that I'm so over undergrad status during general registration...though that wasn't enough for the lines at payment--walang sinasanto kapag dun na.

>>>

my prof. is considered to be of the old school and terror-kind.
my classmates have cautioned me na and stuff last sem, but i ended
up taking her--since the over all consensus is, she is damn brilliant.

besides, if i really am serious about this, how can i survive the wild if I can't survive her class?

and as i entered her room yesterday (I was the first one to arrive) she chatted me up.
got freaked when she knew my name (does my ignorant reputation precede me?)--but soon found out it was easy to guess since we were only 3 in her class! the smallest class size I've ever been to.

so wala ng kawala ito. hindi na gagana ang mga poker-face (bluffing) method ko. hehehe especially after she declared na as much as possible she wants to conduct lectures tête-à-tête (*cough,s excuse my french)--since she likes to analyze her students' body language daw, to discern their receptiveness--oh no...

she wanted to know where i was coming from,
alas! perennial rites of passage na yata 'to

I wanted to invent something like: "i graduated with a BA in english lit at Swarthmore and attended Cornell's school of theory and criticism last summer..."

BAHH!!! NEVER!

Syempre taas noo kong sinabi na i got my BFA in UP, yeah you heard that right! you smug, snobby, lit people out there, FINE ARTS!

"So you don't have much experience in 'reading' theoretical texts"

"Besides, my prerequisite classes...yes."

*Silence...

then, my other classmate arrived--she seems nice. though she appeared like she didn't want anything to do with me

...puis walks "Mrs. H"

half-american? from assumption, MA at Georgetown--socialite,
as old as my prof.

she apologizes for being late.
then she looks at us "young folks"

...when my prof asked the "where are you coming from" query
she admitted she had zero experience in theory

...my prof asked has she taken any prerequisites na...

"i wasn't asked to take any"

...my prof stopped...

"I do not mean to discourage you in any way...but
I had a student once, same case as you...who before
the sem ended I asked to drop or fail"

--and she did.

(I am scared.)

Mrs. H was gracious, she didn't know she had to take any prereqs--she wasn't advised
during enrollment...

to my prof's dismay "this is really unprofessional I am sorry, but the department made a huge mistake, you should talk to them immediately...."

"unless you want to wing it...but it's best you take the prereqs first"

so our class of three now looks like a class of two nalang.

I feel bad for Mrs H. though, I can't imagine her in a class with undergrads!

...

after the incident, she gave us assignments right away.

we should read all that we could on

lit theory, the current state
how is it diff from Lit criticism
and Lit history

we could start as early as the Greeks (which she admits are the more salient)or from the turn of the century
from Sartre--Abrams, Eagleton...etc

...saan hahantong ang tagpong ito?

so I got a head start na agad. besides, after committing my first blunder of the sem
by saying "Sed" instead of "Sa-id/Saïd" in front of her, which elicited a stark "Who?" I am eager to show her na may ibubuga naman ako, at saka I'm psyched to do it, hehehe.

So I ended up in Starbucks Katips on my fave spot, and started reading:

"Literary Theory: A Very Short Introduction" by Jonathan Culler.

This is the petit tresor i found in Fullybooked highstreet during the weekend :-) Thank god I haven't bought it online just yet!

Oxford UP's VSI series is really good, highly recommended. The topics are diverse I think they have more than 200 volumes na, and they are surprisingly easy and engaging to read--written by experts on the field. I currently own 4 of them, and I plan to have more pa, especially the one on Postmodernism (which is my fave topic right now) and Poststructuralism.

Idol ko si Culler, he is so cool...I've read some of his works last sem, and after reading his attempt to introduce THEORY to the masses, siya na ang peg ko. I want to be the Jonathan Culler of the Philippines! hahahaha

he's so good at elucidating stuff

na I finally can get my head around Derrida's

"Il n'y a pas de hors-texte"

I encountered this in a medyo "mediated" form from one of my profs something like "there is nothing outside language" --which after I heard became my number one slogan/answer when somebody asks me "why are you studying literature?" unfortunately hindi ko pa nagagamit ito, since wala namang nagtatanong hahaha.
after being aware of French this summer i was happy to recognize it! baka sabihin ko na siya in french pag nagkaroon ako ng chance :P

"pourquoi??? c'est simple, il n'y a pas de hors-texte"
pagbigyan nyo nako sige na.

and man! it's sooo deep. it blows my effing mind.
heto ah "presence is in a way a kind of absence"

life itself is suffused with signs!!!

..."logic of supplementarity"

the pleasures of text?
--damn right.

...the pleasures of thought

i'll just take it one at a time.
let's see :-)

*Just can't do one more-- I almost died before the summer. The Plan? get a little richer, then quit cold turkey.
