The circumstances surrounding my personal encounter with Ishiguro's most recent novel to date is quite interesting. I bought it on sale at Fullybooked Gateway during my summer internship at Campaigns and Grey. It was also the night that a close neighbor of ours died of a heart attack. And I only had the chance to read it years later, a few months after I left advertising (I reviewed it here)...curious... "Never Let Me Go".
At ngayon ko lang nalaman...it's currently being filmed! Yes a cinematic version starring KEIRA KNIGHTLEY (Awoo! awoo! [300])
I didn't like the novel much when I read it (read my link above for an explanation), but I appreciate the fact that it really is a "different" take on "human cloning"--set in 1990's Britain, the psychological realism and this sense of...dullness...were the things I found very poignant. I'm a fan of Ishiguro, ever since a prof of mine recommended "Remains of the Day" . I think I've read all of his novel's na, except "The Unconsoled" (which I couldn't finish--I think the beginning bored me [but this girl who rejected me, once said that I should finish it...curious..."The Unconsoled"]) and "When We Were Orphans" (it's still unread, gathering dust on my shelf). And judging from his novels that I've read, "Never Let Me Go" is "different" it is not the usual Ishiguro. Come to think of it, the novel is an example of "historiographic metafiction" :-) --one of the big terms I learned last semester. Basically it means an alternate history, like "Watchmen".
The movie looks promising though, I am looking forward to it--besides Keira (I think I have watched all her films since "Bend it Like Beckham") the script is by Alex Garland, not bad!
it is set for a 2010 release.
