Then We Came to the End - Joshua Ferris

will talk about this soon

___

This was my reading fixation for four days. And it was a very pleasurable read, mainly because it spoke about the day-to-day travails of office life. *Office LIFE.

A big subject that I've carried over my back ever since I left school. and to be honest i think am still not over the doubts and shit--about it, about my life, my career, about this lifetime.

I keep on comforting myself that it doesn't matter if i fuck up..cause maybe in my past life i really had it good. i don't know.

*i enjoyed Ferris' novel so much because it was really an acute portrait of a life dedicated in the service of capitalism. and what better setting can you get than a Chicago advertising agency? i found myself caring about the characters so much really, that no matter what happened i wanted to get back to it ASAP.

i don't want to give much about the plot but I'll leave you with a line from the novel that i think captures what i feel about my job right now:

"Maybe there was an alternative to wealth and success as the fulfillment of the American dream. Or maybe that was the dream of a different nation, in some future world order and we were stuck in the dark ages of luxury and comfort. How could we be expected to breakout of it we who were overpaid, well insured and bonanza'd with credit, we who were untrained in the enlightened practice of putting ourselves second."

-Joshua Ferris

what do you think?
