Archie Nostalgia, And How I Learned English

Am just soo0 nostalgic right now.
Really I am.

Heard it on twitter, heard it on Jay Leno (on his last opening spiel for the Tonight show)...
on the 600th issue of Archie Comics--after 65 years... Archie Andrews will propose to Veronica Lodge.

I've stopped reading Archie after elementary I think. And I can say that it was one of my first "reading" materials that I enjoyed when I was young. So in a way it taught me English, hehehe. I totally related to the ad that ran in the comics during those days about the top reasons why you should read Archie--one reason stuck to me, "At least you could tell your parents, 'At least I'm reading!'" :p

I remember my first Archie comic that I bought. It was a double digest edition and it had this cover showing Archie telling the class about something--anyway his bubble goes like, "....read Veronica's diary." Hahaha I can't remember what's it about sorry but the most poignant thing about it was I couldn't pronounce "diary", so I initially assumed you said it like--"diyari" and of course I didn't know what it meant hehehe. I had another word that I learned from it too, "Mustache" (I said "mustashi") can't remember the situation too except that it involved Jughead (my fave character) and something about going disguised on the beach. I bought that issue with some distant aunt and uncle--we ate at Shakey's that day, and I've never gotten over how "veggie" laden the pizza was which made me icky about bell peppers for sometime (hahaha I told you I'm very nostalgic right now!)...and after that I've always asked my parents for Archie when we were at the bookstore or something. My God...the Cubao of the early 90's is just coming back.

Also, Archie comics hold a special place in my heart because it reminds me so much of my grandmother, who passed away more than a decade ago. She lived in LA during the early 90's and when she knew I liked Archie so much she always bought copies for me every time she went home for vacation--and included it in each Balikbayan box she sent! And these were assorted editions, the single and double digest and the standard 17x26 cm kind.

As the years passed I saw my collection grew... it soon filled a small box about the size of a microwave. And I remember how I wanted it to grow even more, just like the Archie fans who got featured in the comic with their pictures taken with their huge collection.

I brought my entire collection (in a backpack) when we went to vacation once in Subic, that was the time we had this major car accident (talk about it in another post)... and among the wreckage of the car (it couldn't be salvaged anymore) with all our stuff scattered on the road--my Archie collection survived--unscathed.

I am quite sad that I lost them na.

And so to Archie, goodluck!

I'm on Betty Cooper's side ever since...
but no matter what happens

I hope you follow your heart Archie!
