Turn Red The Sea | Wilfredo Nolledo

my fiction class in philippine literature opened me to the filipino canon--in english (yes i have to qualify). it is quite an unusual experience for me since i have for a long time regarded pinoy lit as not amounting to much as philippine cinema. but the canon after the war, the american occupation, ultimately the rise of the anglophone tradition, is something worth reading, and it has restored my faith in our own culture, there is hope.

Turn Read the Sea is a one-act play.
socio/cultural/ecnomic references abound
until it reaches the absurd...

dad shoots himself in the head.

mother rushes to husband after gun-shot,
sees him,

she takes the gun
goes to the dining room
son appears

they play Russian roulette.

they take turns holding the gun in their temple,
pulling the trigger

when son realizes the the fatal round is for him
mother blows the candle, son kills himself.

***
that's fucked up.
