I got my representation allowance today so I might do a bit of Christmas shopping after. (Yey!)
I'm definitely buying Jessica Zafra's Twisted 8 tonight. I saw it yesterday but I wasn't sure whether to buy it right away cause I was a little low on cash.
Twisted 8 is a bit more expensive than the previous one (Twisted 7). Most likely because it's a more private venture. Apparently, Zafra's current book is now published by Zeus Books a project of the author and Ige Ramos (designer) and not by Anvil Publishing. I'm just a bit sad though that there's no book signing event for the work not even a formal launch. The copies silently creeped over the shelves. I follow Zafra's blog and her weekly column on The Philippine Star and gleaned nothing but an announcement and promo in one of her posts. (I emailed her asking if there was an event to launch it, but she probably deleted it w/o reading [she wouldn't be jessica zafra if she didn't]). Hope things turn around.
Bummer. Now I regret missing her book signing event at Powerbooks for Twisted 7 almost two years ago. I don't know, it would just really mean a lot to me if I could get an autographed copy of her book or just see her talk at an event or something. She's kinda my inspiration to become a writer of non-fiction. To be honest, I think she's one of my main influences.
Before I always thought that somehow writing would play a major role in my life. But it wasn't really clear to me what genre I would focus on. I really loved the idea that I would become a novelist or short story writer but soon I realized that no matter how much I loved fictional prose I'm not equipped to express myself really well in these fields. It takes a lot of patience and hardwork to realize a novel with short stories I might have a shot (my former prof. thought so) but with essays, non-fiction, I can say that these really get me going. It takes time and patience as well but the non-fiction genre is a field where I can "bring it". Writing essays is my first love after all. And now, I am especially excited to explore the medium of "creative non-fiction".
Thanks Jessica.
