Postcolonial theory is making a huge impact on me nowadays.
It's gotten to a point where I am even starting to despise all the places I dreamed of visiting in this blog. Now, all I see in them is IMPERIALISM. They're just a bunch of greedy capitalist nations suckin' dry every developing nation they can.
It is just atrocious.
Funny things is, I was willing to gloss over these facts before, cause it can't be all that bad. But IT IS. Filipino overseas workers never run out of racist stories and exotic prejudices. And I am beginning to wonder, rather, I am now fully realizing (now that my romantic notions are set aside) how is it going to be any different when I visit Paris? London?
It's NOT going to be anything like Proust in the Luxembourg Gardens for me. I'll just be the "other".
And it is sad.
And it makes me mad. Cause Paris and London became rich because of their colonial empires. The fuckin' Eiffel Tower & the Houses of Parliament is built upon the blood and sweat of the colonies. And the Philippines, unfortunately, is one of them (though pretty much through Spain and AMERICA).
I have to remember that the tumultuous 20th century just happened yesterday. Empires and colonies may have crumbled but they have not disappeared they've just taken new masks. And this is the age I am living in. Neocolonialism. Globalization. Western Hegemony. Still.
I think I have to accept the fact that I'll never see change in MY lifetime.
And there's nothing I can do about it, except open my eyes and realize the world isn't such a welcoming place after all.
But I want to believe there is still beauty in it.
